The company was born in 1958 when Crissante Alessandria, winemaker son of winemakers, together with his wife Teresa, decided to vinify the grapes of the family-owned vineyards, grapes that until then were sold to the most important historical wineries in the Langhe. Between the underground walls of the Cascina Roggeri in Santa Maria di La Morra, with the assembly of Nebbioli from the Roggeri and Capalot crus, Crissante produces its first Barolo with a traditional system aged in 25 quintal Slavonian oak barrels. 

With 14.5% abv and bottled in July of 2018, it’s interesting to see the positive effect an extra 12 months in bottle can have on the wine, compared to just six months for the classic Barolo 2016. There were only 2,000 bottles and 200 magnums produced.

Tasting Notes

Relaxed and incorporated, the 2015 vintage Capalot displays that inimitable soft red focus with a dash of rose tint, so beautiful to behold. The nose pings with sunny red, strawberry, blood orange, sandalwood and a whiff of talc. The veins of sand in Capalot, along with the southern exposure of their vineyard, give a soft, juicy swirl of charming summer fruit, a ‘sweet spot’ that comes from being in the heart of this fine vineyard & amphitheatre. Plus, there’s a balsamic note; it’s both fleshy but also sapid and showing good tension for further development. 

Food Pairing

This is a great meditation wine and as such it can be enjoyed alone in large crystal goblets. It goes perfectly with meats, roasts with cheeses and many other dishes. The great chefs of international cuisine know how to interpret, with local ingredients, refined recipes that perfectly accompany this great wine.
